What are the Different Types of Abortion?

Abortions are classified into two types: medical and surgical. Each involves distinct procedures, timelines, and health considerations.

Before exploring any pregnancy options, it is important to confirm your pregnancy with lab-quality testing and an ultrasound. At The Cline Center, we provide these services at no cost to help you understand your pregnancy accurately.

Medical Abortion

A medical abortion, often referred to as the abortion pill, is an FDA-approved process used in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. It involves two medications:

  • Mifepristone reduces progesterone, a hormone that supports the uterine lining, causing the embryo to detach.
  • Misoprostol, taken 24–48 hours later, induces uterine contractions, leading to bleeding and expulsion of the baby.

Vaginal bleeding and cramping are expected after taking the second medication. Some individuals may pass blood clots, and if these clots are large, sometimes described as the size of a lemon, or if bleeding becomes excessive, such as soaking through 2 pads every hour for 2 hours, medical attention should be sought immediately.

Other possible side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, chills, headache, or fever. Heavy bleeding usually occurs within several hours.

Surgical Abortion

A surgical abortion is a procedure performed in a medical setting under anesthesia or sedation. It involves the dilation of the cervix to allow access to the uterus, followed by the removal of the baby using specialized instruments and suction (similar to a Dilation and Curettage, D&C).

During recovery, patients may experience cramping, vaginal bleeding, or mild discomfort. As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks. These can include infection, excessive bleeding, injury to the cervix or uterus, and the formation of uterine scar tissue.

Surgical abortion is distinct from medical abortion in that it requires direct clinical intervention, rather than medication alone, and is performed in a controlled medical environment.
