3 Things Needed Before Abortion
When facing an unplanned pregnancy, having accurate information is one of the most important things you can have in your corner. Not every pregnancy is the same, and the details specific to yours matter more than most people realize. Here are three things worth knowing before making any decision about abortion.
The Cline Center offers free, confidential pregnancy testing and limited ultrasounds with a positive pregnancy test result so women can get accurate, reliable information before making any decisions.

1. Gestational Age: How Far Along the Pregnancy Is
Gestational age, or how many weeks a pregnancy has progressed, is one of the most important factors when considering abortion. The type of procedure available, the potential risks, and, in many cases, whether a particular option is accessible at all depend directly on how far along the pregnancy is.
A home pregnancy test cannot provide this information. An ultrasound is the only reliable way to accurately determine gestational age. Without it, a woman may not have a clear picture of which options are actually available to her or what to expect from the process.
2. Pregnancy Location: Ruling Out an Ectopic Pregnancy
Confirming the location of a pregnancy is a critical safety step that is often overlooked. A healthy pregnancy develops inside the uterus. In some cases, however, a pregnancy begins to develop in the fallopian tube or another location outside the uterus. This is called an ectopic pregnancy, and it is a medical emergency.
An ectopic pregnancy cannot be treated with the abortion pill. Taking the abortion pill in this situation will not resolve the ectopic pregnancy and can delay the urgent care needed, putting a woman’s life at serious risk. Left untreated, an ectopic pregnancy can cause the fallopian tube to rupture, leading to severe internal bleeding.
An ultrasound is the only way to confirm that a pregnancy is located inside the uterus before considering any abortion method.
3. Pregnancy Viability: Whether the Pregnancy Is Developing
Not every pregnancy continues to develop on its own. Miscarriage occurs in an estimated 10 to 20% of known pregnancies, and in many cases, a woman may not yet have noticeable symptoms. An ultrasound can detect fetal cardiac activity, a key sign that a pregnancy is viable and progressing.
This matters for a straightforward reason: if a miscarriage is already in progress, an abortion procedure is not necessary. Proceeding without this information could mean undergoing a procedure for a pregnancy that has already ended. Knowing the viability status of a pregnancy ensures a woman receives the right care for her actual situation.
Get the Full Picture First
Gestational age, pregnancy location, and viability are three things a home pregnancy test simply cannot tell you, but all three can directly affect your safety and your options. An ultrasound provides all of this information in a single appointment.
